Figurative Language:
personification: The representation of a thing as human.
example: The sun peeked from behind the clouds.
metaphor: Comparing two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as”.
example: The raindrops were tears falling from the sky.
alliteration: The repetition of initial sounds of words in a sentence.
example: The wild walrus wondered what we were when we walked by.
simile: Comparing two different things using the words “like” or “as”.
example: She is delicate as a baby bird.
hyperbole: An obvious exaggeration.
example: I’m so tired because I walked a million miles yesterday.
idiom: A phrase that doesn't literally make sense but has an underlying meaning.
example: I am under the weather today.
onomatopoeia: Words that are also sounds.
example: buzz, snap, hiss
