Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
We will begin our year with a read aloud of the book Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. Mrs. Klumper will introduce figurative language and we will discuss why authors use it. We will also learn how to compare and contrast different events and characters in the story, learn what it means to make an inference, and write about connections we have to this book. I am going to encourage students to not be a "surface thinker". What does that mean? Well, can you picture the iceberg that the Titanic hit in the ocean many years ago? Only a small portion of the top of the ice berg was showing, but there was a whole lot more to the ice berg under the surface of the water that could not be seen at first glance. I would like you to start you discovery of understanding with the tip of the iceberg, but then I want you to think below the surface. There is so much more to discover under the surface. Therefore, I don't want you to be "surface thinkers", I want you to be deep thinkers. Throughout the school year we will practice being "deep thinkers" and spend a lot of time going below the surface in hopes of great discovery. I am looking forward to reading Tuck Everlasting to and with you as our school year kicks off. Even more so, I am looking forward to meeting YOU and getting to know you. It's going to be a great year in 5th grade! See you soon.
